The deposit, the first month in advance, the removal firm and the connection fees all fall due within days of each other, usually before the old deposit has been returned.
This adds them into a single figure so the number you need saved is visible in advance rather than discovered in the week of the move.
What goes into it
Cash needed = deposit + rent in advance + removals + connections, cleaning and everything else. Only the deposit is potentially refundable; the rest is spent. Rent in advance is counted as spent because it buys a month you were going to pay for anyway.
Worked example
A 1,500 rent with a 1.5 month deposit needs 2,250, plus 1,500 for the first month in advance, 900 of removals and 350 of connections and cleaning. Total cash needed is 5,000 — of which only 2,250 comes back, and typically not for weeks after you leave.
Two deposits at once
The old deposit is usually returned after the final inspection, days or weeks after the new one was paid. Plan on funding both simultaneously; assuming the old deposit will roll into the new one is the most common way a move runs short of cash.

How much deposit is normal?
It varies widely by country and is often capped by law — commonly between one and two months rent, sometimes expressed in weeks. Check the local limit, because charging above it is frequently unlawful rather than merely unusual.
When do I get the old deposit back?
After the final inspection and any deductions, which typically takes one to four weeks. Photograph everything on both move-in and move-out days — dated images are the single most effective defence against disputed deductions.
Can I reduce removal costs?
Considerably. Mid-week and mid-month dates are cheaper than weekends and month ends, and doing your own packing usually cuts the quote. Get three quotes, since prices for identical jobs vary far more than most people expect.
