A cavity wall is two skins and needs twice the bricks of a single-skin garden wall of the same area.
The coverage rate depends on brick size and bond. Around 60 bricks per square metre is standard for a single skin of common metric bricks laid stretcher bond; different sizes and bonds change it, so check against the specification you are buying.
The calculation
Net wall area = length × height, less the area of any openings. Bricks = area × bricks per unit area × the number of skins, plus a waste allowance. Mortar is roughly 0.03 of a cubic metre per square metre of single-skin wall.
Worked example
A wall 12 long and 2.4 high is 28.8, less 4 of openings leaves 24.8. At 60 bricks per unit area for a single skin with 5% waste, that is 1,563 bricks costing 1,172 at 0.75 each, and about 0.74 cubic metres of mortar.
Order from one batch
Brick colour varies noticeably between production batches, and a top-up order months later frequently does not match. Order the full quantity including waste at once, and keep any surplus for future repairs rather than returning it.

How many bricks per square metre?
About 60 for a single skin of standard metric bricks in stretcher bond. Imperial sizes, different bonds and thicker joints all change it, so confirm against the actual brick and bond before ordering.
How much waste should I allow?
Five percent on straightforward work, more where there are many cuts around openings, curves or piers. Breakage in transit and on site is normal, and running out mid-course is far more expensive than a small surplus.
Does a cavity wall need double?
Yes for two masonry skins. Where the inner skin is blockwork the brick count is only for the outer skin, and blocks are counted separately at their own coverage rate — usually around ten per square metre.
