Land Area Unit Converter

India measures land in a genuinely confusing number of units, and several of them are regional and not standardised. A bigha is about 27,000 sq ft in parts of Uttar Pradesh but roughly 17,400 sq ft in Bihar and around 6,772 sq ft in West Bengal. Always confirm the local definition before signing anything.

Units that are not standard

Bigha varies more than any other unit — commonly 27,000 sq ft in western UP, about 17,400 sq ft in Bihar, 14,400 in West Bengal, and different again in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Assam and Haryana. Katha and Lecha vary similarly. Where a deal is quoted in these units, get the area restated in square feet or square metres in the agreement itself.

Worked example

A plot advertised as 200 square yards is 200 × 9 = 1,800 sq ft, or about 167 sq m. Quoted at ₹6,000 per sq ft that is ₹1.08 crore; quoted at ₹54,000 per square yard it is the same ₹1.08 crore. Converting to one unit before comparing is the only way to see that two differently quoted plots cost the same.
